Juggling computers

Well, my computer is off for repairs. My mom's new computer just arrived. Since I need to install stuff on it and attempt to recover her old data I won't be sending it on for a few days anyway, which works out pretty well for me. Hopefully my computer should be back fast, before I send my mom's to her.

In other news new iPods, iTunes, and iTunes Music Store.

Gah on new ipods.

My observations:

Silly proprietary dock connector. If they'd wanted to use firewire and USB2, then they should have simply placed both connectors (female) on the bottom of the ipod and male in the dock.

This way, if I travel and need a new cable, cables don't have to come from Apple. The older iPods use standard 6-to-6 pin cables which I can get anywhere in the world.

Rearranging the buttons that control menu, play/pause, and forward and reverse to the top of the scroll wheel is a poor idea. Now if I try and control it without removing it from my pocket, I'll have to fumble and learn some new motor memory in my hand muscles. As it is, left and right are left and right of the wheel. It makes sense the old way.

Trackpad style wheel and buttons: I've had more laptop trackpads fail than I care to count. I like the physical potentiometer and switch reliability compared to trackpad style controls.

/complaint.

Oh, what's the deal with AAC? I see no technical advantage, and would have preferred ogg, which I submitted to Apple in feedback.
