Parties and Social Networks

Last night I went to a prelaunch party in SF for Orkut. It was at suite one8one which is a pretty cool club (especially when you get free cover and two free drinks 8-) . I saw some coworkers and some friends there, as well as anumber of Google employees I have met on one occasion or another. They also handed out the coolest shwag. They had pulsing multicolor LED pens. Oh, and that Orkut guy can dance.

Overall I like orkut more than the other social network sites. It is faster than any of the others, has communities, friends, and a strange rating system that I have not been able to determine the algorithm behind. Currently its userbase is much smaller than friendster, probably because it is invite only (not sure if they are doing that to avoid a rush while they are still bringing their servers online, or if its to build hype), but if your a friend of mine and you want an invite just let me know. Its hard to gauge how large it is. I have about 60% as many friends on orkut as on friendster, though orkut seems to have been seeded in the tech industry population, so it is disproportionately biased towards my social groups at this time, though it seems to be spreading.

Heh. Okay you know we've been hanging out to much when we mention the same things in our entries. It's just uncanny. Jess and I had a similar congruency when blogging from different airport waiting rooms. I swear I didn't read your post before writing mine!
