I just moved kicking and screaming back into the 21st century.

In other words, I once again have a "leash". It should be working tomorrow.

Why is it that my hopes and my expectations are so often in direct opposition?

Now this is terrifying

Some people just scare me. My personal favorite quote from it is:

"The Bible is very clear that is the last days there is a world government - it could be the United Nations, because the UN is totally an anti-Christian organisation, and has been from the beginning."

Fundamentalism is just terrifying. I take solace in the fact that J.K. Rowling is outsells him.

As promised...

Here are some photos. I seem to have contorted myself in a rather unnatural way for one of them ;-)

The UNIX-HATERS Handbook

If you have not read "The UNIX-HATERS Handbook" you really should. It is a very amusing book. Of course you won't because its out of print, and difficult to find. I know, I looked. Earlier today I mentioned that I wanted it to Stuart Cheshire who asked "Do you want a copy?"

I was shocked, and quite frankly I really couldn't accept such a thing, so I told him. I then told me that when he had moved from the 9 group to the X group he had felt it necessary to buy copies for everyone in the building, and had attempt to do so, only to find out it is out of print. Consequently, he has a standing order for it on half.com. He currently has five copies ;-)

The punchline: I am getting a copy of "The UNIX-HATERS Handbook". And if you have a copy you want to get rid of put it on half.com, Stuart will buy it.

Working late

I'm still at work, because something needs to be done by tomorrow morning. Not sure how much longer it will take, but I think I may be coming in late tomorrow...

Site renovations

I am working on getting my new renderer online, but in order to make it non-disruptive I have set up an alternative site. It should generally be in sync with this page in terms of content, but maybe a few posts delayed. I am also going to create a new theme during the renderer bring up. It will be pure CSS assuming I get the browsers I care about to display it correctly. I could also GeoURL or Blog Chalk it. Oh, the possibilities.

I just preordered Zelda

I just went out, and decided to go browsing through an Electronics Boutique. I rarely preorder video games, but I was going to buy Zelda, and if you preordered it they include GameCube versions of "Zelda: The Ocarina of Time", as well as some Japanese N64 variant.

Went rockclimbing

I went rockclimbing with a bunch of friends from work. We went to Pacific Edge in a Santa Cruz. It was a lot of fun. I forgot to bring my digital camera, but next time I go climbing I will take some pictures to post. Because of the rules there only 3 of the 8 people were allowed to belay, since I was one of the 3 I got a pretty good work out. I also did 4 climbs. One was pretty easy (5.6?) and three were a bit more challenging (5.8). I made all the climbs except for one of the 5.8s, but my arms were pretty tired at that point.

I am thinking of getting a cell phone

I stopped using one about 18 months ago, because I decided that they were like leashes, but I am thinking of getting one again. I am going to wait for the next round of phones, because none of them do quite what I want:

  • Long battery life (a week of standby)
  • Bluetooth
  • SyncML
  • Enough memory to hold all my contacts
  • Polyphonic ring tones
  • A base station that lets me use it as cordless in my house (some European phones have this)
  • A rate plane that I like

Some of those features are more important than others ;-)

I take back anything nice

I take back anything nice I ever said about Audible. Any company that lets you sign up online, but makes you phone them to cancel sucks.

I got an email from a coworker this morning that my favorite local book store, "Stacey's" is closing. I went after lunch and spent far too much on books. This sucks.

I actually did a bit of work on my editor over break

I wrote a bunch of code on the plane ride home, and intended to finish it up on the ride back, but I was confused (in case my last post did not convince you of that) and wrote hours and hours of email instead, so now I hacked one button posting, hopefully it works.
