Almost there...

Well, I almost have my mom's new machine ready. I am restoring some of hers files now, and cloning her old drive to a diskimage so we can get anything else we need later.

I decided not to use iChat until I get my machine back, its simpler that way. Of course it means some people might have more trouble than usual finding me. If your waiting for me to long in you may be waiting I while, so send me an email or give me a phone call. I should be back on soon though...

Juggling computers

Well, my computer is off for repairs. My mom's new computer just arrived. Since I need to install stuff on it and attempt to recover her old data I won't be sending it on for a few days anyway, which works out pretty well for me. Hopefully my computer should be back fast, before I send my mom's to her.

In other news new iPods, iTunes, and iTunes Music Store.

Miscellany of all sorts

Well, lots of random stuff happened this weekend. It started off with the strap on my Marware bag breaking as I was walking. At a quick glance my computer was okay, but when I got home and looked I saw the bottom corner was dented so far I could see harddrive through the gap in my Powerbook's case. I'll see about how to get it repaired on monday. I am probably going to be writing some incensed emails about this one. What did I do that so infuriated the laptop god? Whatever it was, I am getting some karmic retribution...

I went to see Confidence, which I enjoyed. After the movie we went to a party, where I had a lot more fun than I expected. I met a fascinating young woman there, we'll see what comes of it. Since I had driven people to the party I had to leave a bit earlier than I wanted to in order to take some friends home (its funny, usually I want to leave the party earlier than everyone else ;-)

Went shopping today. Whole Foods stopped stocking Twisted Bean Vanilla Brew, but started stocking Silk Mocha. Oh well, you win some you loose some.

I have been doing this shit for a long time...

In case you have not been reading this weblog, I have been organizing my apartment, and destroying laptops. This has caused me to notice I have large amounts of stuff I want to get rid of. Thats what ebay is for ;-) Once I updated all my info a posted a few auctions (stuff that is easy to ship for now, just to get back in the swing of things). Apparently they now show the date you signed up in your seller information. "May-26-96" is the date I created my account. Just a month shy of 7 years ago. I guess the net is not so new any more...

In case your curious, here are my current auctions:

Toying with NetNewsWire

I tried at NetNewsWire lite a while ago, and while I liked it I never started using it seriously for two reasons:

  • I also wanted to post to my blog
  • It couldn't do inline rendering

Now it can do the first (which I am testing out right now). From reading some of the discussion between various blogs it looks like NetNewsWire will pick up inline rendering at some point in the foreseeable future as well 8-)

Todays lesson: Never do something nice if it leaves you financially liable

So today I went to switch around some drives on a friend's laptop. I literally do this sort of thing dozens, if not hundreds of times a year. Today the computer stopped seeing any drive off its primary interface. I still have all of the data, but it is a PITA. I remember the first time I broke something on a computer. I was 14 years old, and swapping cards in an Apple //e. The circuit breaker was turned off, but the machines power switch was int he on position. Someone hit the breaker when I was in the other room, and I did not notice when I came back (it was a lab, so it was noisey). When I inserted a card, and sparks flew. As the person who ran the lab told me "You do this everyday, eventually something will go wrong, its not a big deal." Anyway, I feel morally obligated to do something about the broken laptop.

I had been going to give my mother my old laptop, since her laptop died. Instead I am going to give my old laptop to my friend, take my friend's dead laptop and sell it for scrap (Its screen still works and it mostly works, so I figure I can probably get $350-$450 selling it as parts), and buying my mom a new laptop (I estimate it will cost around $850). So I end up spending around $400 to significantly bump up the machine my mom was buying. I estimate that given the way machines are being traded around I will take a net loss of $150-$250 on the whole deal, but it is forcing me to spend a bit of money to make mother have a nicer machine sooner than I would have expected. In the end at least I get to give my mother a better computer, which is nice, and its not the end of the world, but it is an important lesson. I am not doing any more computer maintenance for anyone who is not a family member. My friends can pay someone, because then that person is liable.

Long time, no blog

Well, I should update this. I am home for Passover. Since my last entry everything has turned on its head. But on the upside I managed to clean my living room, finished moving around my furniture, and boot a Roomba, which I love. More soon, and maybe I will actually get a template I for the site.
